Lisbon’s Best Locations for Engagement Photos

1. Bairro Alto: Bohemian and Vibrant

For couples who enjoy an eclectic, lively atmosphere, Bairro Alto is one of the most well-known areas to go out for a dance and a drink, with its hundreds of little bars and restaurants. However, during the day, it can look quite different. The narrow streets, colorful buildings, bed sheets drying in the windows’ clotheslines, facades made of tiles, and the iconic Elevador da Bica just around the corner make it a fantastic backdrop for engagement photos that are artistic and full of life. Whether you’re looking for a more intimate shot in the quiet mornings or vibrant images as people start to arrive in the area, Bairro Alto provides endless photo opportunities.

If you’re looking for an example of an engagement photoshoot in Bairro Alto, you can check these blog posts: Drew + Thena, Andrea + Pat and the first few photos of Jeena + Bob

Best time for photos: Early mornings for quiet streets or golden hour (late afternoon) when the light is soft and romantic.

2. Alfama: Historic and Intimate

As one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods, Alfama is known for its maze of narrow cobblestone streets, azulejos, and the true Portuguese spirit: a grandma by the window.
This neighborhood is home to places like , the National Pantheon, Santa Luzia’s viewpoint, São Jorge Castle, Miradouro das Portas do Sol (my favourite!), and many other amazing little corners. It is the perfect choice for couples seeking intimate and timeless shots with some of the most picturesque backdrops. It does often involve a bit of uphill walking (Lisbon is, after all, the city of the seven hills!), but it’s great for as many breaks as you would like.

This Beatriz + Louis engagement photoshoot started in Alfama, and you can also check Nic + Yvonne, Becca + Brock and Melissa + Lionel had their photos taken there.

Best time for photos: The viewpoints in this area are really popular, so they can get quite crowded during the day/afternoon. If you want to have your photos taken at these viewpoints, do it early in the morning (sunrise is beautiful there, I promise) to beat the crowds.

3. Baixa-Chiado: Elegant and Urban

For a more urban, yet elegant, feel, Baixa-Chiado provides a mix of classical architecture and contemporary charm. The grand Praça do Comércio, framed by arcades and the Tagus River, offers stunning views and makes for dramatic shots. Rua Augusta with its impressive arch, and the surrounding streets with elegant façades, are perfect for couples looking for a sophisticated atmosphere. Baixa-Chiado offers a perfect balance of Lisbon's historic and modern energy. With a lot of neutral colours and the Lisbon yellow iconic trams occasionally passing by, this is perfect if you prefer more open spaces.

One of my favourite photoshoots here is Madeline and Nicholas’ engagement session.

Best time for photos: Early morning or late afternoon for a magical sunset by the river.

4. Belém: Majestic and Iconic

If you're after grandeur and history, Belém is the place to be. This area is home to some of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, and the Monument to the Discoveries. These majestic structures create a regal backdrop for engagement photos. Additionally, the gardens along the river offer a tranquil space to capture romantic moments with views of the water and historic monuments. Whether you want classic, romantic photos or shots with a majestic, architectural backdrop, Belém has it all.

Royce + Julian photoshoot is a great example of a session in this area.

Best time for photos: I don't think anything beats sunset here! Even though it’s such a popular spot, there’s enough space that you won’t feel like your photos are cluttered with crowds.

Day Trips from Lisbon for Stunning Engagement Photos

If you’re looking to wander a bit outside Lisbon for your engagement photos, there are several stunning day-trip locations nearby. From medieval towns to breathtaking beaches, these places offer a mix of natural beauty and historic charm.

1. Sintra: A Fairytale Escape

Sintra is a magical town nestled in the mountains, known for its palaces, lush greenery, and romantic atmosphere.

Sintra Old Town

The historical centre of SIntra is a lovely place to have your engagement photos taken at. Full of backstreets, corners and quirky places, it’s the perfect choice for couples who want a picturesque backdrop.

If you want to check more photos, you can head to Destiny and Matt’s blog post.

Distance from Lisbon: ~30 kms

How to get there:
- By train (recommended): Take the CP Sintra Line train from Rossio Station to Sintra Station (~40 min, €2.45 one way).
- By car: Drive via IC19 (~30-40 min). Parking in Sintra is limited, so consider parking at the outskirts and using public transport.

Best time for photos: Early morning! Sintra is very popular (for good reason) but being a small village means that it gets crowded quite quickly so to avoid having to go shoulder with shoulder with hundreds of tourists, I recommend getting there early

Azenhas do Mar

A couple in front of the whitewashed houses in Azenhas do Mar

Azenhas do Mar is a stunning seaside village built into the cliffs along Portugal’s Atlantic coast. Whitewashed houses cascade down the hillside toward the ocean, creating a picture-perfect setting that feels almost surreal. The dramatic cliffs, the ocean pool below, and the winding pathways through the village offer plenty of unique backdrops for engagement photos. Whether you want a cozy moment with the village in the background or a dramatic shot by the sea, Azenhas do Mar is a dreamy location for couples who love coastal charm.

Angela and Derek decided to start their session in this picturesque town, in case you want to check their gallery.

Distance from Lisbon: ~40 kms

How to get there:
- By car (recommended): Drive via IC19 and N247 (~45 min). Parking is available near the cliffs.
- By public transport: Take the train from Rossio to Sintra, then take bus 440 or 441 to Azenhas do Mar (~1h 30 min total).

Best time for photos: Sunset is absolutely breathtaking here, with the warm light illuminating the cliffs and ocean. Morning sessions can also be magical, with fewer people and softer light.

Adraga Beach

For couples who love wild, untouched beaches, Adraga Beach is a perfect choice. Surrounded by towering cliffs and dramatic rock formations, this beach has a raw, natural beauty that makes engagement photos feel cinematic. The golden sands, ocean waves, and sea-carved arches create an intimate and adventurous atmosphere. It’s ideal for barefoot walks by the water, playful moments in the sand, and stunning wide-angle shots capturing the vast landscape.

This dreamy session of Tammie and Stanley is one of my favourites.

Distance from Lisbon: ~40 kms

How to get there:
- By car (recommended): Drive via IC19 and N247, then take Estrada de Almoçageme to reach the beach.
- By public transport: Train from Rossio to Sintra, then take bus 403 towards Cascais and get off at Almoçageme, then walk ~25 min to the beach.

Best time for photos: Definitely sunset! The golden hour here is absolutely magical.

Lagoa Azul

Maternity photoshoot image focusing on the beautiful background with forest and the Blue Lagoon in Sintra

Lagoa Azul, or “Blue Lagoon,” is a peaceful, forested area near Sintra that feels like a hidden paradise. Surrounded by pine trees, the lagoon reflects the sky beautifully, creating a serene and almost mystical atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot for couples who want a more intimate, nature-filled setting for their engagement photos. The soft light filtering through the trees, combined with the calm water, adds a dreamy, fairytale-like quality to the images. It also has some trails, perfect for adventure.

Distance from Lisbon: ~ 30kms

How to get there:
- By car (recommended): Drive via IC19, then take N9 and N247. There is parking near the lagoon.
- By public transport: Take the train to Sintra, then a taxi (~15 min) or rent a bike to explore.

Best time for photos: Either morning or mid to late afternoon for golden light through the trees. In autumn, the changing leaves create a beautiful warm color palette.

Cabo da Roca

Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, where the land dramatically meets the Atlantic Ocean. The breathtaking cliffs, crashing waves, and never-ending horizon make it one of the most epic locations for engagement photos. The raw, windswept beauty of Cabo da Roca adds a sense of adventure and grandeur to your shoot, making it perfect for couples who want something bold and dramatic.

I have already mentioned Angela and Derek gallery, which you can check again as we ended the session here.

Distance from Lisbon: ~40 kms

How to get there:
- By public transport (recommended): Take the train to Cascais (from Cais do Sodré, 2.30€ each way or free with Lisboa Card), then bus 403 to Cabo da Roca (~1h 20 min total).
- By car: Drive via A5 and N247 (~45 min). Parking is available, but it can be crowded.

Best time for photos: Sunset is the best time to capture the stunning light over the ocean. Be prepared for strong winds, and bring layers, as it can get chilly even in summer.

Palácio de Monserrate

Palácio de Monserrate is one of Sintra’s hidden gems, offering a unique blend of Gothic, Moorish, and Indian architectural influences. Surrounded by lush gardens, exotic plants, and beautifully intricate archways, this palace feels like something out of a fairytale. The detailed carvings, grand corridors, and sunlit terraces create a stunningly romantic setting for engagement photos. It’s a perfect location for couples who want an elegant, historic atmosphere with a touch of fantasy.

Important Information: Palácio de Monserrate charges a 150€ fee to have a session on their grounds. You can check more information here: Parques de Sintra

Distance from Lisbon: ~35 kms

How to get there:
- By public transport (recommended): Train from Rossio to Sintra, then bus 435 directly to the palace (~1h 10 min total).
- By car: Drive via IC19, then take N375 towards Monserrate (~40 min). Parking is available but limited.

Best time for photos: Anytime is perfect, but if you want to have more privacy I recommend in the morning period, especially in the summer.

2. Ilha do Baleal, Peniche: Rugged Coastal Beauty

Couple in front of a dramatic rugged cliff in Ilha do Baleal at sunset

Ilha do Baleal, in Peniche, is known for its rugged cliffs, golden beaches, and powerful waves. Connected to the mainland by a narrow sandy strip, this island is a dream location for couples who love the ocean. Engagement photos here can have a dramatic, adventurous feel, with crashing waves and rocky formations creating a stunning backdrop. Whether you want barefoot moments on the beach or cinematic shots against the cliffs, Baleal offers a unique mix of wild beauty and romance.

Right at the end of 2022, I’ve shot a family + couple photoshoot here and it’s still one of my favourite places.

Distance from Lisbon: ~ 100 kms

How to get there:
- By car (recommended): Drive via A8 and IP6 towards Peniche, then follow the signs to Baleal (~1h 20 min).
- By public transport: Rede Expressos bus from Lisbon Sete Rios to Peniche (~1h 10 min, between 3.95€ and 6.95€ one way, depending on the time of departure), then a taxi (~10 min) or walk.

Best time for photos: Sunset is absolutely magical here, with golden light reflecting on the water and cliffs.

3. Óbidos: A Romantic Medieval Town

Couple in a cobbled stone street in the Medieval Town of Obidos

Óbidos is one of Portugal’s most charming medieval towns, with cobbled streets, whitewashed houses adorned with colorful flowers, and an impressive castle. Walking through its narrow alleys feels like stepping back in time, making it an ideal setting for couples looking for a romantic and timeless engagement shoot. The stone walls, Gothic churches, and hidden courtyards provide endless opportunities for dreamy, storybook-like photos.

Distance from Lisbon: ~85 kms

How to get there:
- By public transport (recommended): Rodoviária do Oeste bus from Lisboa (Campo Grande) to Óbidos (~1h).
- By car: Drive via A8 (~1h). Parking is available outside the walled town.

Best time for photos: Early morning or late afternoon for soft lighting and fewer tourists. Avoid weekends if possible, as Óbidos can get quite crowded.

4. Praia do Areal, Lourinhã: Secluded Beach Escape

Couple kissing in the wide empty Areal Beach at sunset

For couples seeking a peaceful beach location away from the crowds, Praia do Areal in Lourinhã is a fantastic choice. This expansive sandy beach is framed by cliffs and offers a more secluded feel compared to some of the more famous beaches near Lisbon. The wide shoreline allows for playful and intimate shots, and the natural dunes add a soft, dreamy texture to your photos.

One of the first sessions I’ve done since moving back from London, was Sara + Tiago in Areal Beach. Nearby there’s also other options like this session in Praia da Peralta or this one in Paimogo.

Distance from Lisbon: ~75 kms

How to get there:
- By car (recommended): Drive via A8 and N8-2 to reach Lourinhã, then follow local roads to Praia do Areal.
- By public transport: Bus from Campo Grande (Lisboa) to Lourinhã or Praia da Areia Branca (~1h), then taxi from Lourinhã (~10 min) or walk from Praia da Areia Branca (~ 10 min).

Best time for photos: Sunset is ideal for a warm, golden glow. Early mornings are also perfect for an intimate, private session with soft light.

5. Santa Cruz, Torres Vedras: Dramatic Cliffs & Ocean Views

Santa Cruz is a hidden gem on Portugal’s west coast, featuring a cute coastal town, rugged cliffs, stunning ocean views, and long stretches of sandy beach. The dramatic rock formations here add an extra element of depth to engagement photos, making it a fantastic location for couples who love nature. Whether you’re walking barefoot along the shore, standing on a cliff with the wind in your hair, or embracing by the water, Santa Cruz offers a naturally beautiful and cinematic setting. There’s plenty of beaches to choose from as well as the town itself.

Vinciane + Benito photoshoot was in one of the many beaches you could choose from, and one of my favourites - Praia Azul.

Distance from Lisbon: ~65 kms

How to get there:
- By car (recommended): Drive via A8 and N247 (~1h).
- By public transport: Bus from Campo Grande (Lisboa) to Torres Vedras (~ 40min), then bus 703 or taxi to Santa Cruz.

Best time for photos: Sunset for golden-hour magic, or early morning for soft lighting and an empty surroundings.

6. Ericeira: A Charming Seaside Village

Couple laughing and hugging sititng down in Ericeira coastline among the greenery at sunset

Ericeira is a picturesque fishing village that has become famous for its surf culture and laid-back atmosphere. The combination of whitewashed houses, blue accents, and breathtaking coastal cliffs creates a dreamy Mediterranean feel. Engagement photos in Ericeira can include charming old streets, oceanfront pathways, and panoramic sea views. It’s the perfect spot for couples looking for a mix of seaside romance and relaxed elegance.

Couple posing in front of Santa Maria House Museum beach

Just a short drive from Lisbon, Cascais is a sophisticated coastal town known for its beautiful beaches, historic architecture, and vibrant marina. Couples can take photos along the scenic waterfront promenade, inside the charming old town, or at Boca do Inferno, a striking cliffside rock formation. The mix of elegant buildings and ocean views makes Cascais an incredibly versatile location for engagement shoots.

Best Time of Year for Engagement Photos

Portugal’s mild Mediterranean climate makes it a fantastic destination for engagement photos year-round. However, some seasons are better than others:

- Spring (March - June): One of the best times for engagement sessions! The weather is pleasant, wildflowers are in bloom, and the landscapes are lush and green.

- Summer (July - August): While summer offers beautiful light, it’s also the busiest and hottest season, especially in tourist-heavy spots like Cascais and Óbidos. If you’re planning a summer session, aim for early morning or late evening to avoid crowds and heat.

- Autumn (September - November): Another ideal time for engagement photos, with warm golden tones, comfortable temperatures, and fewer tourists.

- Winter (December - February): Lisbon and nearby areas have mild winters, so you can still have beautiful engagement photos without extreme cold. However, coastal locations can be windy and rainy, so be prepared for unpredictable weather.
